This past week I had the opportunity to work with Mrs. Lisano’s third graders to create book reviews of the Lemonade Wars using the iPad app Telestory. This free app allows students to star, film, and direct their own “TV show.” For this particular assignment, students were asked to use the critic’s corner theme. They wrote cue cards containing information about the story’s characters, setting, plot, as well as their opinion of the book. Through this project, students have the opportunity to practice their reading fluency as well as their speaking and oral language skills. Their self confidence also increases when they see themselves on camera and realize their work is being shared with a global audience via YouTube. Students’ final creations were shared with Mrs. Lisano via Google Classroom and uploaded to her YouTube channel. Below is Lily’s Telestory, who, after watching her finished project stated, “every time I hear my voice I can’t believe how cute I sound!” I wholeheartedly agree and highly recommend trying Telestory at the elementary level. You can check out several more finished products by visiting Mrs. Lisano’s Lemonade Wars playlist on her YouTube channel.
