If This Then That/ Put the internet to work for you
The basic gist of what IFTTT –
It literally does put the internet to work for you. With IFTTT you won’t have to worry about forgetting your umbrella when it’s going to rain, or feel to over dressed when it’s nice and sunny out because with IFTTT you can have text messages or e-mails sent to you that tells you when it’s going to rain or be sunny out. However, telling the weather is not the only thing it can do, the possibilities are endless.

How to Use:
You start off by signing up into IFTTT. With that out of the way you create a new task. Now the task is limited, but has many possibilities and outcomes. The Template for IFTTT is simple, “If _______ Then _______” so for example it could say, “If ‘it rains tomorrow in Burlington’ then ‘send me a text message'”

Many Other Possible Tasks include, (but is not limited to):

  • “Every time you are tagged in a photo on Facebook, it will be sent to Dropbox.” – m364rhynch05
  • “Tomorrow’s forecast calls for rain send me an email” – ale74
  • “Email me when a new ifttt channel is announced. ” – ovpaul

How it can be used in a school setting:
For now the use of IFTTT in a school setting is limited, however, hypothetically if a teacher were to have a twitter/texting/or e-mail (be it person or for school uses) he/she can set up a Class Facebook page and create a task that which would be like “If I send this tweet/text/e-mail then there will be a post on the Facebook Page” so the teacher would be able to post up assignments or reminders much easier, since Facebook would be much easier to have contact with then a personal site.

or let’s say a student has a question, and a teacher has a school twitter, the student can send a tweet to the teacher, and the teacher would be able to receive must more quickly if he/she created the task “If I get a tweet with my name in it (or something) then send me an e-mail or text”

Summary:
The possibilities are endless. but are still limited, overall the site is great and provides many unique ideas and features that haven’t been used or seen anywhere else before. The whole thing is free to use, but text charges do still apply though, other then that it’s a fun tool, that once you start using it, you’ll want to create more tasks, and the cool thing about IFTTT is that you can create tasks that can trigger other tasks! Like if you create a task saying “If I post a status on Facebook, then tweet my status” and another task saying “If I tweet then send me a text message” then with one Facebook status you can tweet and get a text about it. Cool right?
