Bookshare is a non-profit organization which provides students with diagnosed print disabilities free access to ebooks and digital content (books, textbooks, newspapers and magazines) that can be used at school or home. Bookshare has thousands of fiction and nonfiction works available for use with DAISY (Digital Accessible Information System) reader free access software. Through an award from the U.S. Department of Education Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP), Bookshare offers free memberships to U.S. schools and qualifying U.S. students.
Burlington Public Schools has a free organizational membership. U.S. public K-12 schools with memberships have access to Bookshare’s NIMAC-sourced (National Instructional Materials Accessibility Center) textbooks and can download these books for students who qualifiy and have an individualized Education Plan (IEP).
Membership in Bookshare is available to students with qualifying print disabilities through Burlington Public Schools organizational membership. With this type of membership, teachers and/or staff members (Sponsors) download books for their students (Members). Bookshare provides Burlington Public Schools with:
- Roster of Sponsors: teachers and/or staff members who will download the books
- Roster of Members: students with qualifying print disabilities who will read the book
Student members sign up for individual memberships so they can download books on their own. An individual membership allows any individual with a qualifying print disability to download books from Bookshare. With such a membership, an individual can still also be listed on an organization’s membership. Students under the age of 18 need permission from a parent or guardian to sign up with Bookshare. The default number of downloads per month is 100 books.
Students can download Bookshare’s copy of READ:OutLoud Bookshare Edition which is available for both PC and Mac. This DAISY reader is designed specifically for Bookshare books reading the text out loud with synthetic speech while displaying it on the screen.
